For those who enjoy ice cream, the announcement of a new shop near downtown Brewton may be a dream come true.

Amanda Quick Chavers received approval for a lease from the City of Brewton for the shop to be located at 188 South Boulevard adjacent to Jennings Park.

“It’s exciting,” Chavers said. “I’ll be going from scoping to scooping.”

The local nurse has plans to get renovations to the property underway immediately.

“We are hoping to have everything ready at least by the Blueberry Festival in June,” Chavers said. “We may be able to open sometime in May. It will just depend on how the renovations go.”

The shop will open under the name Aunt Elsie’s Ice Cream Shoppe and will offer a variety of frozen treats, Chavers said.

The location, currently owned by the City of Brewton, has been home to Brewton Barista in the past. Another shop had planned to open last spring, however the COVID-19 pandemic changed those plans when many unessential businesses were shuttered.

Located at the foot of the bridge adjacent to Jennings Park, city officials say the location should be perfect placement.

“The shop will have a retro look to it and will be a great addition to the area,” said Connie Baggett, the city’s director of programs.
