The Conecuh Ranger District is planning a 616-acre prescribed burn today near the Rock Creek Community, according to a release.

During the burn today, the public will notice forest service fire crews and equipment, and smoke may be visible on Covington County Road 4 and Escambia County Road 11.

According to a release, as temperatures cool, the smoke may begin to settle in down drain areas and around the burn area. Those who encounter smoke on roadways, slow down and turn on low-beam lights.

The forest service uses prescribed fires, or controlled burns, as a management tool to remove excessive ground debris to help reduce the size and severity of wildfires and improve plant and animal habitats.
