Area residents interested in paying tribute to those lost as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack by terrorists, will have an opportunity this weekend.

A special ceremony has been planned on the lawn of the Escambia County Courthouse on Belleville Avenue in Brewton beginning at 8:46 a.m.

Charles Jackson, with the Escambia County Firefighters Association, is helping to organize the memorial event for the area.

“The Con-gressional Record indicates that 8:46 a.m. was the time of the first attack that day,” Jackson said. “We will be gathered at the Veteran’s Memorial Monument at the time to hold a moment of silence.”

Jackson said first responders and military personnel from the area will be honored with a prayer breakfast prior to the ceremony on the courthouse lawn.

“We are asking that people plan to gather beginning at about 8:30 a.m.,” Jackson said. ‘We will having a flag dedication at that time and have a moment of silence before folding the flag. The flag will then be taken to the display at the Escambia County Courthouse where it will be placed with other items commemorating the event.”

Escambia County citizens who lost their lives as a result of the attack and the war that followed, will be honored during the ceremony.

Those lost were. U.S. Army Sgt. Tamara C. Thurman, who died on Sept. 11, 2001 in the attack on the Pentagon; U.S. Marin Corps Cpl. Christopher D. Winchester, who died July 14, 2005 in Trebil, Iraq and U.S. Marine Corps. LCPL Travis M. Nelson, who died Aug. 18, 2011 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan while fighting in the war on terror.

Area dignitaries, first responders and law enforcement will be in attendance. The flag is provided by the American Legion.
