The Escambia County Commission approved a long-term detention subsidy agreement with the Department of Youth Service Monday during a regular meeting of the group. A grant agreement with DYS was also approved during the meeting.

According to County Administrator Tony Sanks, the Department of Youth Services makes one bed available for Escambia County at their facility in Baldwin County.

“We have one bed available per night for juvenile detention purposes,” Sanks said. “Those beds are not cumulative. If we have in excess of one, we pay $105 per night of our allotted space.”

The grant approved Monday is an $80,000 grant made possible by Project Turnaround. The project works to provide services to youth who are at risk to help change their patterns and behaviors, Sanks said.

In other business, the Commission:

approved the vacation of several streets and alleys in McCullough. Areas vacated include Washington Avenue east of Garden Street; Madison Avenue east of Garden Street; and four 15-foot wide alleys in the area.
