The holiday shopping season has officially begun and one local group is hoping shoppers will fill some goodie bags for area children in need this year.

Stephanie Walker heads up the “Christmas Project” each year and is assisted by staff and members of the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce as well as other elves from the community.

Walker said this year, the tree holds angels representing children in the area who may not have a bright Christmas if not for the generosity of area shoppers.

“We buy clothes for all the children, but toys really bring a smile to kids’ faces,” Walker said. “We love it when people select their favorite toy or game to pass on to a child.  We really appreciate everyone that stops to shop for a toy.”

Walker said those who purchase items for the Angels on the tree, should bring their unwrapped gifts to the Chamber of Commerce office no later than Monday, Dec. 13.

Walker said the gifts will be packaged and distributed to children in time for the Christmas holiday.

“The trees at Walmart is the only tree for us this year,” Walker said. “It has tags for toys for children ages 3-14.”

Walker said generous contributors make it possible for the organization to purchase needed clothing items for those angels represented on the tree.

A host of volunteer shoppers will be making purchases for the angels in the coming weeks.

The Christmas Project began more than a decade ago in the Brewton area to offer an opportunity to provide toys, clothes and other items for area children in need. The tradition continues with community support.

Angel Trees are situated at both front entrances at Brewton’s Walmart on Douglas Avenue.
