Soul Food is known as the food of the South and Brewton is home to one of the newest Soul Food restaurants in the area — Shug’s Soul Food Spot.
Open for just two months, the restaurant is has quickly become known for its good, old-fashioned comfort foods and excellent service.
Owned and operated by Diane Carter, the restaurant opened quietly on Dec. 27, 2021.
“Brewton folks are amazing,” Carter said. “Everything has been going very well. My community has opened their arms so wide for me.”
Business was so good just this past Sunday, Carter had to close the doors early.
“We were so busy Sunday we had to close an hour early just because we simply ran out of food,” Carter said. “It’s just been amazing.”
The main reason for the overwhelming support from the community, may just be that Shug’s Soul Food Spot is one of the few places to get food like you used to get when you sat at grandmas’s table.
Among the items on the menu, you’ll find homemade items like green baby Lima beans, collards, rutabagas, steamed cabbage — and of course, macaroni and cheese.
The restaurant, located in historic downtown Brewton, is open Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch only. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, dining is available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Wednesday and Thursday are my prep days,” Carter said. “Anybody that wants to drop by and help clean collards or turnips is welcome to knock on the door and come in to help.”
With a great lunch menu every day, Carter said the offerings on the menu change for Saturdays each week.
“We do a little more laid back menu on Saturdays,” Carter said. “We have a variety of wings, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and those wonderful loaded fries — just the good stuff.”
Carter said her menu offers dine or carry-out choices and is available during normal business hours.
“My mother once told me that when you find what you like, you’ll do well,” Carter said. “I didn’t know what she meant until now. Cooking is my passion and I am very lucky to be working with my passion.”
Although the restaurant has been open for just over a month, the response from the community has been amazing.
“It only took a few people posting about it on Facebook to get some response,” Carter said.
The restaurant is located at 104 St. Joseph Avenue on the square in downtown Brewton. To call in an order, call 251-286-7041.
