A partnership between the City of Brewton and the University of Alabama was approved in Monday’s meeting of the Brewton City Council.
That partnership will see repairs to damaged or decaying headstones and monuments repaired in Union Cemetery.
Union Cemetery has been an important resting place for Brewton’s loved ones since at least 1879. State officials acknowledged the historical significance of Union Cemetery for our area by adding it to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register on April 7, 2006.
In the resolution, city officials approved the plan to work with the Office of Archaeological Research (OAR) with the University of Alabama in making the repairs.
OAR submitted an estimate for the repairs at $54,730 to repair and restore the sites at Union Cemetery.
Funding for the project will be made through the cemetery trust overseen by the City of Brewton.
Currently the city manages the trust which is used for the upkeep and any capital improvements of Union Cemetery which has been in place since 2014.
It is unclear when the project of restoration and repairs will begin, but it is expected within the coming weeks.
