In less than a week, the skies over East Brewton will be bursting in celebration of Independence Day 2022.
East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark said members of the Ft. Crawford Committee and employees of the City of East Brewton have been working for months to prepare for the July 4th celebration.
“We’ve all been working on this for about four months,” Clark said. “We’ve got things cleaned up, spruced up and all the plans are in place to make sure everyone enjoys the celebration.”
Clark said the absence of the annual celebration in the city last year has everyone ready for a party for the 2022 celebration.
“We had fireworks in 2020 but not in 2021,” Clark said. “This year, the fireworks show is going to be even better than before and will be one of the better shows ever seen in this area. This one is going to be great.”
Clark said the events leading up to the fireworks display will offer area residents a chance to celebrate the day safely.
“We have plenty of activities going on all through the day,” Clark said. “We wanted to offer something so that people could get out and celebrate with each other in a safe way.”
The events will kick off with activities at the S.A.I.L. Center on Williamson Street with a spades tournament at 9 a.m. and bingo games at 1 p.m.
“We have a lot of great prizes for bingo this year,” Clark said. “We are ready to have a good time and let folks relax a little.”
Clark said there will be plenty of chances to get some food during the day-long event.
“We will have food at the S.A.I.L. Center for those there for spades and bingo,” Clark said. “We will also have food at the park during the horseshoe tournament, and right up until the fireworks show.”
At Ft. Crawford Park, the activities get underway at 4 p.m. with the horseshoe tournament with live entertainment starting at 5 p.m. with the annual Duck Race at 6 p.m.
“We’ve got a good line up of some local singers and musicians,” Clark said. “That will begin at 5 p.m. and we have our headline band hitting the stage at 8 p.m.”
A Touch of Blue will entertain revelers from 8 p.m. until the fireworks display set for 9:30 p.m.
“This is a new band for us this year,” Clark said. “We are happy to have them and they come highly recommened to us. I’m sure they will put on a good show for the crowd.”
Clark reminds regular visitors to the S.A.I.L. Center that the center will be open only for carry-out meals on Thursday and Friday this week as crews prep for the day of activities there.
The ducks for the annual duck race down Murder Creek will be available for purchase throughout the day at the S.A.I.L. Center and at Ft. Crawford Park. Each duck is $5 and the winners will receive cash prizes of $200 for first, $100 for second and $50 for third.
As the fireworks finale of the day draws close, the Lee Street bridge will be closed to traffic as pyrotechnics are prepped for the show.
