With the high cost of practically everything rising, it’s no surprise that energy costs are rising as well.Elizabeth Weatherford with Alabama Power Company said the rise in costs associated with providing power is forcing the company to increase rates.“As you know, the cost of necessities like gas and groceries has increased,” Weatherford said. “Alabama Power has worked hard to keep the cost of electricity as low as possible. However, the rising cost of fuel has necessitated an adjustment to our rate.”Weatherford said the changes will take place at the beginning of August for area customers. When the changes take effect, the typical residential customer bill will increase by about $6 a month to cover this higher cost of fuel. “Using diverse fuel types and sources has helped dampen the increase – which is lower than the current rate of inflation,” Weatherford said. “We do not make any money from fuel expenses, and we remain committed to providing the low-cost, dependable service customers have come to expect. “
Customers will also notice a credit on their July bill. Typical customers will receive a one-time credit of about $19, Weatherford said. The credit is due to lower than forecasted cost in 2021.
“We’re here to help customers struggling to pay their bills,” Weatherford said. “There are options we offer for working directly with customers to provide assistance.”
