Fishermen who enjoy a day on the lake will now have to find somewhere other than the Leon Hines State Lake in Wing.
Doug and Allie Devine have been managing the lake that will be closing this week.
“The lake, shop, and grounds will be shut down as of Monday, September 26th,” Allie said. “We were not state employees so we were not paid by the state. We did, however, have to pay the utilities and maintain the grounds at our expense. There were far fewer fishermen this year and we couldn’t meet the bills. We did offer to be open on weekends and work full time jobs during the week to keep the lake open but DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) decided not to amend the contract for a schedule change.”
The couple have been running a store at the lake to provide bait, tackle and snacks for those coming to the lake for recreation.
“We are heartbroken about having to close the lake and shop but we ran out of options. We will miss being a part of everyone’s fun times at Leon Brooks Hines.”
Devine said the future of the lake will be determined by the Conecuh National Forest and Alabama Freshwater Fisheries.
