As part of a Civics project at Brewton Middle School, one group is working to help other students in the community.
The seventh grade class at Brewton Middle School is actively participating in the service-learning program with the Liberty Learning Foundation. The grade level has been broken down into smaller Torch Teams, and each team has chosen an organization to support or an issue to highlight. The projects are all student organized and student managed.
“The S.N.A.K. Squad” (Super Nutrition Awareness & Knowledge) has partnered with Bushel & a Peck Produce, 22nd State Bank, and Auburn University Brewton Agricultural Research Unit to help teach the benefits of healthy eating.
As part of their learning activity, the group is collecting health, shelf-stable foods to donate to the local “Backpack Buddies” initiative. The “buddy” program provides over 200 weekend end meals to Students weekly.
Donations to be included in the Backpack Buddy program may be donated by dropping off items at Brewton Middle School, Hurri-Clean or 22nd State Bank.
The deadline for drop-offs for the current program will be Dec. 14 by the close of business.
22nd State Bank is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at the intersection of Deer Street and St. Joseph Avenue in downtown Brewton.
