It would only take law enforcement three days to capture a Brewton man wanted for stealing a vehicle in East Brewton last Tuesday.
Jason Earl Wright, 36, of Brewton, was arrested in Texas Friday and will be making the trip back to East Brewton to face the charges against him.
East Brewton Police Chief Kenny Brazile said Wright jumped into a vehicle at the East Brewton Circle K on Tuesday morning and drove away leaving the victim behind.
“Wright was walking in the area and saw the opportunity to jump in the truck and take off,” Brazile said. “Based on information we’ve received Wright was in Flomaton, Atmore and was last seen in McDavid in the truck.”
Although area law enforcement was on the lookout for the suspect and the vehicle, it would take a call from police in Katy, Tex., to put the run to an end for Wright.
“I was notified Friday morning by Katy police officers that they had the vehicle and the driver,” Brazile said. “After they confirmed the vehicle and the suspect, they placed hi under arrest.”
Brazile said the truck is still in Texas, but arrangements are being made to get the vehicle back to Alabama and its owner.
Brazile said Texas police had reason to approach Wright in the vehicle while he was at Bucee’s in Katy, Tex. The arrest will likely find Wright facing other charges in Texas as well.
Wright faces a charge of theft of property first and a charge for fradulent use of a credit card when he is returned to East Brewton, Brazile said.
“The charge for fraudulent use of a credit card comes from him getting gas for the vehicle while he was running,” Braile said.
Wright, who had been released from the Escambia County Detention Center in October 2022, will be making a return to life behind bars.
“I credit good police work for the resolution of this case,” Brazile said. “Wright has a lot to face when he gets back to Alabama.”
Brazile said Wright had active warrants for probation violation when he left the area.
He most recently spent just over two months at the Escambia County Detention Center on theft and burglary charges, according to jail records of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
Wright has been at odds with lawn enforcement for several years with arrests as far back 2009 with a lundry list of charges from theft of property, assault, domestic violence, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, possession and distribution of controlled substance and burglary.
Arrangements to bring Wright back to East Brewton to face the charges against him are underway, Brazile said.
