Martha Lynn Kennedy lead local law enforcement agencies on a hunt Tuesday evening after fleeing from the Escambia County Detention Center upon booking.

Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson said Kennedy was being booked at the facility on outstanding warrants.

“She was involved in a crash near Atmore and officers there saw that she had outstanding warrants,” Jackson said. “She was then brought to the jail for booking on those warrants. While the deputy was taking care of the paperwork and making a copy of the warrant, Ms. Kennedy fled from the lobby of the jail.”

It was then that officers with the department began their search for the woman. The search was joined by Brewton Police with East Brewton Police assisting in their attempts to locate the woman.

“We called in the K9 unit from Fountain Prison to help locate her,” Jackson said. “We held the perimeter and it only took about 10 minutes of tracking before she was found in some bushes at O’Bannon Park.”

Kennedy was returned to the Escambia County Detention Center just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night and was booked on the standing charges against her with the addition of a charge for escape. Jackson said other charges might be forthcoming.
