Brewton area residents will remember the name and work of Larry Manning as being one of the area’s most talented artists.
Manning will again be a part of Brewton with an upcoming art exhibit held where he once taught art.
The show, which will open on March 1 will be housed in the Thomas E. McMillan Museum and Art Gallery on the campus of Coastal Alabama Community College on Alco Drive.
Manning has been an artist and art instructor for over 54 years beginning his career at Pensacola Junior College where he studied with Carl Duke and Bill Clover. He transferred to Florida State University where he majored in painting with Kari Zebe. After completing his bachelor and master degrees, he moved to Pensacola where he taught art at the University of West Florida.
He began to work in clay sculpture and continued to paint in oils. Later, he would return to graduate school at the University of Mississippi and received his Master of Find Arts degree in ceramics with a minor in painting.
Manning worked with NEH artist-in-schools in Mississippi before moving to Alabama where he became department head at Jefferson Davis Community College (now Coastal Alabama Community College) for 28 years. During his tenure he studied at Cornell University and spent a summer in Cortona, Italy with the University of Georgia. He also spent a summer at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. He studied with Mr. Fugita of Japan and Mr. Oh of Korea and Mr. Shimizu of Japan. After retiring from Jefferson Davis, Manning has been an adjunct at Pensacola State College with 15 years of teaching ceramics, art history and art for the non-art major.
Manning, along with his wife Diane, own and operate The Magic Kiln Pottery in Pace, Fla., a business they have had for 23 years.
Manning continues to paint and create pottery of stoneware and porcelain fired in reduction and wood fired kilns.
He remains an active art lecturer, arts judge and full time artist. His work is shown in both local and national galleries including Artel and Blue Morning. His work can be found in art collections world wide.
The show on the CACC campus will run through march 30 and will be open to the public Tuesday through Thursday each week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Field trips are encouraged for the show.
