The Brewton Bee Garden Center was buzzing early Tuesday as the business opened for the second week.
Owners Hillary Herrington and Michael English are putting their love of all things green to work with the business.
“We opened last Saturday,” English said. “It wasn’t a soft opening because we had people walking in as soon as we opened the doors.”
Herrington said the new venture for the couple is something that just “fell into place.”
“I always loved visiting here when Steve had it,” Herrington said. “We were all said when he closed. I had always wanted to do something else with flowers. Sometimes, God just puts things into your path and they fall into place.”
The Brewton Bee Garden Center has brought the return of ready-to-plant foilage, vegetables and flowering trees to the area.
English said that the Center already has a wide assortment of ferns, plants and fruit trees with plans to expand as the seasons change.
“We have plants of all kinds and plan to make more available,” English said. “We will have Christmas trees in season and even some hardscapes like fountains, firepits and those kinds of things.”
Although English said the Center is geared toward plants, there will be seasonal offerings of fruits and vegetables from local farmers.
“We don’t have the room to have vegetables right now,” English said. “But, we will make space available for farmers to bring produce and have it available here.”
The new garden shop is located at 209 Mildred Street. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturays and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
“We are working people and we want to make things better for other working people,” English said. “We have hours that will make it easier for working folks to come shop with us when they get off work or on the weekends.”
Both Herrington and English say they are happy with the reception of the new business to the public.
“This is just one way can give back to the community,” English said. “We are community people and we almost felt obligated to give back.”
