Holy Week, Easter bring special services, events

As Easter Sunday quickly approaches, several events around the community continue to look forward to the celebration.
Holy Week services continue today through Friday at area churches with services at noon. Each service is followed by a light lunch aimed at helping attendees keep their lunch break to an hour.
Services scheduled for the remainder of the week include a service today (Wednesday) at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on Escambia Avenue. The message will be presented by the Rev. Carl Dickerson of the First United Methodist Church.
On Thursday, services will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Belleville Avenue with the Rev. Patrick Madden of St. Maurice Catholic Church.
The Good Friday service will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Belleville Avenue with the Rev. David Chatel of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church brining the message.
There will also be a time for children and some fun on Saturday at a community-wide Easter Egg Hunt.
The event, set at Dogwood Hills Park on Douglas Avenue, is set to get underway at 10 a.m. There will be 10 prize eggs with $100 each and 10 children’s prize baskets. The adults will also have a change a five other prizes.
The Brewton Fire Department will be on hand cooking up hot dogs and hamburgers for all to enjoy following the “Eggciting Egg Hunt”. The Easter Bunny will also be on hand for photos, so bring your camera and enjoy a day in the park.
In addition to the egg hunt, runners and walkers will also have a chance to be a part of the Bunny Run 5K event. For details, contact the Entertainment and Events Committee with the City of Brewton, 5K organizers.
On Sunday, several churches in the area are holding early morning and sunrise services in celebration of Easter Sunday.
First United Methodist Church in Brewton will hold a sunrise service beginning at 6:30 a.m. In East Brewton, First Bapitist Church will be in service at 7 a.m. Other services around the area include London Baptist Church with a 6 a.m. start with breakfast to follow and normal services at 10 a.m. Berrydale Baptist Church on Hwy. 4 in Jay will be in service at 7 a.m. with breakfast following and a regular service at 11 a.m. Canaan Freewill Baptist Church at Barnett Crossroads community will have an Easter program at 10:30 a.m. with worship at 11 a.m. Wallace Baptist Church on Wallace Road will have a sunrise service beginning at 6:30 a.m. with a full breakfast to follow.
