Officials with America In Bloom have announced the addition of a Brewton leader as part of the team of advisors for their program
“We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Millie Murphree has joined us as a new America in Bloom Advisor!,” the group said in a social media post.
“Millie brings incredible expertise, enthusiasm, and a deep love for helping communities thrive. With her rich background, she is eager to support and guide communities in creating beautiful, vibrant, and sustainable spaces. We are so excited to see the positive impact Millie will have as she works with communities nationwide. Please join us in giving Millie a warm and enthusiastic welcome!”
Millie Murphree, PhD, is the County Extension Coordinator for Escambia County. Her job responsibilities include community workforce, leadership and economic development as well as local programming. She leads beekeeping programs, 4-H rabbit club, and Master Gardener program. She serves as the Kiwanis Club President and is on other boards like Smart Growth, Arts Council, Tree Beautification, and the Escambia Career Readiness Center. She is a former teacher where she taught middle and high school English for 13 years. She has a master’s in Secondary Education Language Arts, a master’s degree in Agricultural and Extension Education, and a doctoral degree in Agricultural Science. Millie has a love for teaching and a passion for agriculture. Millie’s Extension interests reach beyond Escambia County as she has travelled to New Zealand, Guatemala, and Uganda to conduct research and to teach different agricultural practices. Millie is committed to raising nutritional awareness through local food systems like school and community gardens. In her spare time, Millie likes to work in her backyard creating a habitat for birds and butterflies as well as planting fruits and vegetables.
