To say Todd Williamson was surprised Tuesday night may be an understatement.

Williamson was named Citizen of the Year at the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual membership banquet.

Austin Rogers read from the nomination letter putting Williamson up for the annual honor.

“He puts his heart into everything he does,” Rogers read. “He has touched so many lives and continues to lead through his work at W.S. Neal High School and around the community.”

Williamson, who said he didn’t deserve the honor, said Tuesday’s award was all because of the people around him.

“I’m not deserving of this award,” Williamson said. “It’s all because of the great people behind me. I love what I do. I love this community. And, I love these kids. It’s not about me. I’ve just been lucky enough to ride along with some wonderful people.”

Williamson currently serves as the principal at W.S. Neal High School in East Brewton and has a wide range of interests outside of school working with students and families across the community.

Also honored during Tuesday evening’s festivities, were the recipients of scholarships presented to a T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal High School student.

Receiving the Donnie Rotch Excellence in Achievement was T.R. Miller High School Junior Destinee Curry. Curry received a $500 scholarship to further her education sponsored by David’s Catfish House.

Receiving the Phillip Ellis Excellence in Achievement award was W.S. Neal High School Junior Dakota Dubose. He received a $500 scholarship to continue his education courtesy of The Medical Center Pharmacy.

A special recognition was presented by incoming Chamber President Melissa McMillan.

Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson was recognized for his unwavering support of events and activities of the Chamber and throughout the community.

“He never says no to anything we ask,” McMillan said. “He has worked tirelessly in so many areas to support the events of the Chamber.”

Jackson said saying no just isn’t an option.

“It’s hard to say no especially when Mrs. Judy (Crane – chamber executive director) asks,” Jackson said. “I am happy to support the Chamber and I ask that you support your Chamber, too. They support you in all they do. And to the Chamber, I thank ya’ll.”
