Brewton’s Mayor and council were introduced to the T.R. Miller Head Coach Monday as the group held their regular meeting.
Brewton City Schools Superintendent Kevin Wieseman introduced the newest member of the staff at T.R. Miller High School.
“It is one of my greatest opportunities to bring to your our new head coach, Ronnie Cottrell,” Wieseman said. “The excitement we have seen in the week he has been with us is unbelievable. We appreciate officials in the city welcoming this native son home.”
Cottrell said returning to Brewton to coach has been his desire for many years.
“I’ve wanted to come here before and I’m glad the time is now,” Cottrell said. “Psalm 37:4 says ‘Delight yourself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart,’ and that’s what this is.”
Cottrell said he will begin working through spring practices this week as his official first day with the team was Tuesday, and he said he has high hopes for the season ahead.
“The team was good last year and we have a chance to be good again,” Cottrell said. “Even after losing some players, I think we have something here that other places don’t have. I want to see the team do well and bring people out to the games again this season.”
Cottrell said chance to coach at his Alma Mater and in his hometown is one he won’t take for granted.
“We are a blessed community,” Cottrell told the council. “In my career I’ve been to a lot of different colleges and schools, but we have something special here. When you think of Brewton you think of T.R. Miller and the Brewton City School system. I hope we all realize what a wonderful community we have.”
Mayor Yank Lovelace told Cottrell he was “thrilled” to have him as part of the TRM team.
“We are thrilled they chose you for this time,” Lovelace said. “We look forward to your time here and to see the success of the football team and other sports at the school.”
Cottrell is a 1977 graduate of T.R. Miller High School.
In other business, the Council:
• approved an agreement for services with the Brewton Area YMCA for summer staff (lifeguards) at the Municipal Pool;
• approved an agreement with the Alabama Forestry Commission for a Tree Grant. Director of Programs Connie Baggett said the $100,000 grant was the largest grant awarded among only six recipients in Alabama. Planting will begin soon in several areas around the city.
