Escambia County Commissioner Raymond Wiggins joined a clean up crew on Monday — all with a purpose to help clean up the county roadways.
The crew was made up of seven Escambia County Detention Center inmates who helped with the project under the direction of Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson.
Wiggins said the project along Travis Road was just one of several planned across the county this week in recognition of Earth Day coming on April 26.
“I’m just glad to be able to get out into the county to do some work that will help our county be a cleaner place to live,” Wiggins said. “This is a project that we, as county commissioners, take on each year. Although we support the daily work done to help keep our county roadways clean, this is something that we all make a point to do each year to bring attention to the importance of making our roadways cleaner and safer for travelers.”
The crew who worked the project on Monday were volunteers who were eager to help, Jackson said.
“Every spot on this crew is voluntary,” Jackson said. “They are all willing to get out and work to better their community. As a result of their work here, we will be able to give a good recommendation for them to the district attorney and the judge.”
Jackson said the crew members aren’t bad men, just ones who made bad choices.
“It’s interesting to see how good they are,” Jackson said. “They’ve made some bad choices and that’s why they’re here. This kind of work gives them an opportunity to get out and about in the community. It gives them a chance to get out of the jail for a while and avoid becoming institutionalized and the best part is that they are giving back to the community.”
Wiggins said other members of the Escambia County Commission will be taking to the roadways in the county as the week progresses.
Steven Dickie worked with the clean up crews on Tuesday along Appleton Road.
Today (Wednesday), Larry White was set to work with crews along Old Fannie Road.
Commissioners Brandon Smith and Karean Reynolds will be working on roadways within their districts in the West end of Escambia County.
In addition to the individual clean up by each commissioner, the Commission has also established a schedule for clean up assistance to county residents.
Dumpsters will be provided in each district through April 26 to allow county residents a place to off-load unwanted items.
Dumpsters will be available for the disposal of trash at the following locations:
13533 Hwy. 29 – Boykin/Damascus County Shop;
3251 Pea Ridge Road – Brewton County Shop;
351 Jack Springs Road – Atmore County Shop;
Spring Hill on Ridge Road for East Brewton area;
22475 Hwy. 31 – Flomaton Firehouse for area residents.
No tires, electronics, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, ballasts, paint or household garbage will be allowed at dumpster sites.
For the disposal of tires, electronics, fluorescent bulbs and ballasts, visit any of the following locations on April 26 only:
Boykin-Damascus County Shop; Pea Ridge Road County Shop; Jack Springs Road County Shop; or the Flomaton Firehouse in Flomaton.
No household garbage will be accepted at any location.
