Law Day events set May 1, 2 for county’s seniors

High school seniors from across Escambia County will have the opportunity to witness the workings of the court system in the annual Law Day event set at the Escambia County Courthouse in Brewton on May 1 and 2.
On Thursday, May 1, students from Atmore Christian School, Escambia Academy, Escambia County High School, Flomaton High School and Homeschooled Kids & Company, will be seated to hear a case regarding domestic violence.
On Friday, May 2, students from W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller High Schools will be seated to hear a case regarding the use and felony-possession charges.
Jurors will be chosen from among the students attending on each day of the activities.
On Thursday, students will hear from John Milton Coxwell, Jr., Esquire, Attorney at Law recognized by the Alabama State Bar for 50 years of service.
On Friday, the guest speaker will be retired judge, Charles Price who has been recognized by the Alabama State Bar for 50 years of service.
Jurors will render a verdict in both cases with each defendant agreeing to accept the decision prior to the case proceedings.
Also expected to address students is Earnest White, Esquire who will give an overview of the drug crisis across the country.
Judges to oversee the cases are the Honorable Jeff White on Thursday and the Honorable Judge Todd Stearns on Friday.
Steve Billy, Escambia County District Attorney, will be the State’s attorney in both cases.
