Mike Sims is ready for his new role as head coach at W.S. Neal High School.
Sims was officially named to the position last Thursday by the Escambia County Board of Education. Officials at W.S. Neal High School posted on their social media about the placement of Sims in the position:
“W.S. Neal has officially promoted Coach Mike Sims to Head Football Coach. A 1999 graduate of W.S. Neal, Coach Sims returned home two years ago to serve as Offensive Coordinator. Last season, he expanded his role, overseeing both the offense and defense for the Blue Eagles. After graduating from Neal, Coach sims continued his football career at the University of West Alabama, where he was a standout leader on the Tiger defense. Following his collegiate career, he spent time with the Atlanta Falcons organization before transitioning into coaching. With 19 years of coaching experience — including 12 as a head coach — Coach Sims brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the program. We look forward to the future of Blue Eagles football under his leadership.”
Sims previously coached with Fountain at Escambia Academy in Canoe. When Fountain resigned that position to come to W.S. Neal, Sims was expected to take over the reigns at EA. However, Sims chose to leave the area and head over to Excel to take the top football position there.
Sims previously coached at Autauga Academy in Montgomery where he lead the Cougars to several playoff appearances.
Sims began working again with Hugh Fountain at W.S. Neal and will be entering his third year as part of the coaching staff at the East Brewton school — next season as Head Coach.
Sims has also served as the track coach for W.S. Neal having coached the team to the 4A Alabama High School Athletic Associations Section 1 Championship. Several members of the track team will be headed to state finals set in Gulf Shores.
The upcoming football season schedule has been announced with tames for the Eagles as follows:
Aug. 22 – Preseason game hosting Central Hayneville; Aug. 29 – Host to Excel; Sept. 5 – Travel to St. Michael; Sept. 12 – Host to Orange Beach; Sept. 19 – Host to Marianna; Sept. 26 – Travel to Blountstown; Oct. 3 – Homecoming with Satsuma; Oct. 10 – Travel to Escambia County High School (Atmore); Oct. 17 – Host to Jackson; Oct. 24 – Travel to Mobile Christian; Oct. 31 – Host to T.R. All home games will be played at the Eagle Stadium located on the W.S. Neal High School campus in East Brewton.
