A crowd of supporters converged on the lawn of the Escambia County Courthouse on Belleville Avenue in Brewton Monday to honor soldiers who were lost in battle.
The American Legion Post 90 in Brewton hosted the annual event that featured the reading of the names of soldiers lost in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the War on Terrorism.
More than 200 Escambia County natives are included on the list which was read by Charles Jackson.
Master of Ceremonies Joe Dozier offered thanks to those who attended the annual gathering in Brewton.
“Thank you all for being here today,” Dozier said. “We honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice by giving their most precious gift — life itself — so that we could sit here today and honor them freely.”
Bernie Raines offered prayer as the ceremony got underway, followed by Jackson’s reading of the names.
Jackson also provided information on the number of soldiers who died during war time throughout the years.
“Freedom is never free,” Jackson said. “From the Revolution War until the War on Terrorism, American’s have lost 1,350,000 lives as the result of war.”
Jackson also reminded attendees that July 4, 2025 will begin the Golden Age of America as the country celebrates 250 years of freedom.
Dozier also thanked the East Brewton Methodist Church for providing display and seating accommodations for the event. He also announced the names of students who are participating in Boys’ and Girls’ State with the American Legion.
