The City of Brewton has an ordinance in place to control the placement of signage throughout the city — including political signs.
With the municipal political season in full swing, area residents have seen campaign signs popping up around the area, but candidates should keep the rules set forth by the ordinance in mind as they put signs out.
In the ordinance, no signs are allowed on a street or highway right of way. The right of way is described as the area between telephone poles. Property owners may give permission for signage placement on their property, however, the right of way rule still applies.
Placing signs at intersections in the city are also not allowed. No sign should be placed in such a way as to interfere with the sight of traffic ensuring safety.
Other areas or structures where signs are not allowed include fences, trees, standpipes, street sign poles or telephone/light poles.
No signs are allowed in areas that would obstruct sidewalks nor are they allowed on city property.
Sizes are also restricted for any sign including political signs.
The maximum size for any sign in the business district of Brewton should be no larger than eight-feet high or 16 ft. square. The same rules pertaining to sight of traffic safety should also be observed. Rules for placement of signs in residential areas of the city state signs no larger than 6×6 ft. square are in place.
It is also noted that signs placed on private property should be permitted by the property owner with no more than four signs per property space allowed.
The City of Brewton has the authority to remove any signs that violate any part of the ordinance.
All signs must be removed within seven days of the election date.
The oridinance is available to view during regular business hours at the office of the city clerk inside Brewton City Hall on Douglas Avenue.
