Brewton 10U softball finishes third at state

The Brewton 10U all-stars girls softball team finished third in the state tournament Saturday in Alex City.
Brewton opened with a 15-5 win over Sylacauga Friday, but lost to East Brewton 16-3 later that night.
On Saturday, Brewton lost to eventual state champion Alex City 9-3 to end pool play. In the elimination round of games, Brewton lost to Alex City 13-3 to be eliminated.

Game 1:
Brewton 15, Sylacauga 5
In their first game of the tournament Friday, Brewton defeated Sylacauga 15-5.
In the top of the first, Sylacauga jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Brewton answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first to take a 7-3 lead. The big hit for Brewton was a grand slam home run by Courtland Salter. Makenzie Thomas, Chloe Smith, Ansley Till, and Rebecca Ann Moore also had hits in the first inning for Brewton. In the top of the second inning, Sylacauga scored two runs and narrowed Brewton’s lead to 7-5.However, Brewton answered with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Courtland Salter, Rebecca Ann Moore, Macie Happolt, and Makenzie Thomas had base hits in Brewton’s second inning.
Brewton pitcher Courtland Salter shut Sylacauga out in the third and fourth innings.
On offense, Brewton scored two in the third led by a Courtland Salter single. Brewton scored one run in the fourth inning to end the game by the ten run rule. Makenzie Thomas walked, stole second and third base, then scored on a passed ball to end the game. Courtland Salter allowed five runs on four hits and four walks. She recorded eight strikeouts. Leading hitters for Brewton were Makenzie Thomas with three hits, Courtland Salter with three hits, and Rebecca Ann Moore with two hits.
Game 2:
East Brewton 16, Brewton 3
In the district championship game in Andalusia last week, Brewton defeated East Brewton 16-2, but East Brewton responded in their state tournament game by beating Brewton 16-3 Friday night.
East Brewton scored three in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead when Kendall Carpenter drove in all three runs with a home run. Brewton scored two in the bottom of the first to narrow the lead to 3-2.
Jennings Ruzic had a bunt single for the only hit for Brewton in the first inning. Ruzic and Makenzie Thomas scored on passed balls.
East Brewton scored 10 runs in the second inning after getting six walks, reaching on an error, and singles by Ashli Wyatt, Natalie Wyatt, and Harley Wilson.
Brewton responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning after Caroline Williamson walked, advanced to second base on a single by Abby Terrell, and scored on a single by Macie Happolt. At the end of two, East Brewton led 13-3.
In the top of the third, East Brewton scored two runs when Natalie Wyatt doubled to knock in Madison White and Kendall Carpenter, who had base hits earlier in the inning. East Brewton again added a run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 16-3.
Madison Hawthorne reached base after being hit by a pitch. She later scored on an RBI groundout by Jaylen Bondurant.
East Brewton pitcher Ashli Wyatt held Brewton scoreless in the third and fourth innings and the game ended after four innings because of the 10-run rule.
Leading hitters for Brewton were Jennings Ruzic, Abby Terrell, and Macie Happolt. Each had a single. Makenzie Thomas was the losing pitcher. She and Courtland Salter combined to give up 16 runs on eight hits, seven walks, and two hit by pitches. The Brewton pitchers combined for five strikeouts.
Game 3:
Alex City 9, Brewton 3
Two Alex City pitchers combined to pitch a no hitter against Brewton as Brewton lost 9-3.
Brewton pitcher Chloe Smith held Alex City to two runs through four innings. Alex City’s first run came in the second inning after the leadoff batter walked and scored on an error. Alex City picked up another run in the third after the leadoff batter reached on an error and scored on a single.
Brewton tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Makenzie Thomas and Chloe Smith walked to lead off the inning. Ansley Till was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Thomas scored on a passed ball and Smith scored on an Abby Terrell groundout.
In the top of the fifth, Brewton took a 3-2 lead. Makenzie Thomas reached on an error and scored on a stolen base and passed balls. Alex City again took the lead in the bottom of the fifth by scoring seven runs and then held Brewton scoreless in the top of the sixth inning to end the game. Chloe Smith pitched 4 and 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits. She walked one and struck out one.
Makenzie Thomas pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up three runs on a hit and three walks.
Game 4:
Alex City 13, Brewton 3
In an elimination semifinal game, Alex City defeated Brewton 13-3.
Makenzie Thomas led off the game with a bunt single, but was stranded on third base. Brewton pitcher Courtland Salter held Alex City scoreless in the bottom of the first inning.
In the second inning, Ansley Till was hit by a pitch and later scored on a Rebecca Ann Moore bunt. Again, Alex City failed to score in the second inning and Brewton led 1-0 after two innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, Alex City scored six runs on a walk, two errors and three singles.
Heading to the fourth inning, Brewton trailed 6-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Alex City picked up another run and led 7-1 heading to the fifth. In the top of the fifth, Brewton scored two runs to close the gap to 7-3. Caroline Williamson walked and Abby Terrell reached on a fielder’s choice. They were driven in by a Makenzie Thomas single.
In the fifth inning, Alex City scored six runs to end the game with the 13-3 win.
Courtland Salter pitched for Brewton gave up seven hits while striking out six batters.
