The City of Brewton will kick off its 125th birthday today by honoring its namesake.

City officials will lay a wreath at the grave of Edmund Troupe Brewton at 8 a.m. at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery.

An historic marker dedication will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the sidewalk at the downtown location of Bank of Brewton. The original bank front, located adjacent to the current entrance, will be the site of the marker and dedication honoring the financial institution as the oldest bank in Alabama.

Both ceremonies are open to the public.

Other events during the weekend include an Evening of the Arts tonight at the Hourglass from 5 to 7 and a concert by Rusty Golden and friends at 7 p.m. at The Ritz.

On Saturday, the 30th annual Alabama Blueberry Festival will include arts and crafts vendors, food and children’s activities. Saturday night, a free movie will be held, followed by fireworks.
