The suspect who shot a hotel owner and then engaged in a three-hour standoff with Brewton police Wednesday has been charged with attempted murder, Police Chief Monte McGougin said.

Donald Gregory Wilson, 49, of Brewton, was on probation in Escambia County, Fla., at the time of the incident, McGougin said. Police in Brewton likely won’t add any misdemeanors to the charges because of the pending case in Florida.

“We’ll try him, and he’ll go back to Florida,” McGougin said.

Wilson holed up in a room at the Colonial Manor motel on U.S. 31 in Brewton after allegedly shooting the motel owner, Vusha Patel, who came to speak with him about his bill. He shot at police five times during the standoff, McGougin said.

Patel was treated at and released from D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital on Wednesday.
