The W.S. Neal Lady Eagle JV team picked up their first win of the season Tuesday at Pleasant Home while the varsity Eagles lost to drop to 1-1.

In the JV win, the Lady Eagles won the match 2-0 winning set one 25-16 and set two 25-5.

“This was a good win for us tonight and another great way for our program to open its season,” W.S. Neal Lady Eagle head coach Britney Shelly said. “We hustled and played great defense against Pleasant Home. As a team we served extremely well. Bailey (Stone) had a stretch in the second set of 15 straight service points that kept Pleasant Home out of the game and help secure our win. We stuck together as a team and came out with a victory.”

Stone led with 21 service points, nine aces, and two kills. Marissa White added nine service points, one ace, and one assist.

Marissa Cutts had eight service points, Gracee Dixon had six service points, two aces, two assists, and three kills. Stephanie Lambert added one assist and four kills.

Varsity: Pleasant Home 3, W.S. Neal 2

In varsity action Tuesday at Pleasant Home, the Lady Eagles lost 3-2.

In set one, Pleasant Home won 25-15 and took set two 25-20.

In set three and four, W.S. Neal tied the match with a 25-21 win and a 27-25 win.

In the fifth and deciding set, Pleasant Home took the win 15-7.

“This was a tough loss for our girls,” Shelly said. “We played hard in sets three and four but just could not put the match away in the fifth set. This is something our program has had trouble with in years past. I think a lack of ball control was a huge contributing factor in our loss. We just could not get good passes to our setters. Ball control is extremely important and we could not do that against this team.”

Malary Booker led with 20 service points, five aces, four assists, and one block and Britta Wood had 19 service points, four aces, six assists, and two blocks.

Amanda Crawford added 18 service points and two aces and Whitney Douglas had 13 service points, three aces, four kills, and one block.

The Lady Eagles will be back in action Tuesday for their first home match of the season with a middle school, JV, and varsity game against Flomaton at 4 p.m.

The W.S. Neal Middle School volleyball team started the season on a winning note Tuesday with a straight sets victory over Pleasant Home Middle School at Pleasant Home.

In game two the Lady Eagles won 25-11.

Tykeria Nolan had two points and Cheyenne Jackson rounded out the scoring with one point.

“I thought our kids played pretty good,” new W.S. Neal Middle School Lady Eagle coach Joe Ellington said. “We didn’t make a lot of mistakes.”

W.S. Neal Middle will be back in action Tuesday, Aug. 31 against Flomaton Middle at W.S. Neal High School gym at 4 p.m.
