Three people are dead after a “terrible accident” in which a driver failed to stop at a red light in Flomaton and hit another car, killing its two occupants.

The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Alabama 113 on Monday.

Stephen Thompson and his 9-year-old son, Nathan, were both killed instantly after another vehicle ran into the side of their car, police said. The third victim later died after being lifeflighted to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. A fourth victim is still in critical condition in Sacred Heart Hospital.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. and according to witnesses, it appeared that a 2008 silver colored Mercury sedan did not stop for a red light and ran straight into a red 1999 Murcury sedan traveling north on U.S. 31.

The impact carried both vehicles into an empty 18-wheeler service bay at Rowland Tires.

The red vehicle came to rest near the front of the bay while the silver vehicle went air-borne and landed on the other side of the 1999 vehicle.

Thompson and his son, riding in the red vehicle, were both killed instantly, police said.

The two occupants of the silver vehicle, Alice Bradley Bradford and Edward Bradford, were taken by LifeFlight to Baptist Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital.

Both were severely injured, and Mrs. Bradford later died.

There was no word on the condition of Mr. Bradford as of Tuesday afternoon.

Flomaton Police Chief KaTaris Jenkins said it appeared Mrs. Bradford was driving the silver car.

“It was a terrible accident,” Jenkins said. “The Alabama State Troopers were here to help with the investigation and members of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department to direct traffic and help in the investigation.”

Firefighters from Friendship Volunteer Fire Department, Flomaton Fire Department, McDavid Volunteer Fire Department, Century Volunteer Fire Department and Molino Fire Department also assisted the Flomaton Police Department with the accident scene.
