Through the efforts of T.R. Miller High School students, the street in front of the school will be renamed Donnie Rotch Drive in honor of their principal, who was killed in a car accident earlier this year. The dedication will take place at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Leigh Margaret Bostic, a senior at the high school, said that Coach Kim Owens, a coach at Brewton Elementary School first approached her with the idea.
“I live on Hutto Street, the one that is being renamed,” she said. “I thought if was a very good idea and a good way to honor Coach Rotch. So I wrote a letter to the Brewton City Council, asking them if it could be done. They voted on it and the idea passed.
“Next Tuesday morning before school, we will have a short dedication,” she added. “I will give a little short speech and then the Rotch family will unveil the street sign. The signs are being installed and will be covered until the dedication.”
T.R. Miller High School principal, Mary Bell, said that the school is very honored the students wanted to make this change as an expression of their love for Rotch.
“We are very honored that the city agreed and wanted to change the name of the street so there will be a permanent memorial to him.”
