TRM Tiger basketball teams get another sweep with wins over Excel Monday

In their second game in three days Monday night at home, the T.R. Miller basketball teams swept their competition as all three teams came away with wins.
The Tiger teams defeated Excel as the B-team improved their record to 2-2 with their second straight win, the Lady Tigers improved to 5-2 with their fourth straight win, and the varsity Tigers also improved to 2-2 with their second straight win.
T.R. Miller’s B-team will be off until Tuesday, Jan. 4 when they take on Flomaton at home. The Lady Tigers and varsity Tigers will begin play Friday at home as they host the Escambia County Tournament.

T.R. Miller B-team 32, Excel 21
Leading by four heading into the final quarter of play Monday, the Tiger B-team outscored Excel 7-0 in the fourth to get a 32-21 win.
T.R. Miller fell to a 10-0 run by the Panthers in the first quarter to trail 12-4 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, the Tigers fought back with a 9-3 advantage to cut the lead to 15-13 at the half.
In the third quarter, T.R. Miller used an 8-0 run to turn a 16-15 deficit with 5:19 left into a 21-16 lead with 2:28 left in the quarter. From there, the Tigers would hold a 25-21 lead heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, the Tigers held Excel scoreless to get the win by 11 points.
T.R. Miller shot 5-of-8 from the free throw line in the win while Excel was 3-for-6.
Dominique Jackson led T.R. Miller with 12 points and Shawn Tolbert and Caleb Hubbard had five each. Aaron Yuhasz added four points and Caden Lodge, Kieon Smith and Allen Miller had two points each in the win.

T.R. Miller Lady Tigers 46, Excel 21
In their first area game of the year, the Lady Tigers had a close game on their hands with Excel until the final quarter of play as they pulled away for a 25 point, 46-21 win.
The Lady Tigers led 11-3 after the first quarter and used a 9-0 run in the second quarter to lead 20-10 at the half.
In the third quarter, Excel stormed out to a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 20-16 with 5:28 left to play in the quarter. Both teams would score nine points in the quarter as the Lady Tigers led 29-19 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth, the Lady Tiger lead went from 10 points to a 21 points in 1:14 as they went on an 11-0 run and ended up having a 17-0 run to hold a 46-19 lead with 3:41 left in the game.
That would be the final points of the game for T.R. Miller as Excel scored two points with 2:18 left, their only points in the quarter, as T.R. Miller would outscore the Panthers 17-2 to get the win.
The Lady Tigers shot 1-for-6 from the free throw line while Excel was 4-for-8.
Leah Brundidge led the Lady Tigers with 25 points and Sha Kiser had nine. Courtney Jones had seven points and Brittany Rush had four points. Adrian Gibbs added two points for T.R. Miller in the win.

T.R. Miller varsity 46, Excel 33
In a very intense and physical game, the T.R. Miller varsity Tigers picked up their second straight win, two more than all of last year, with a 46-33 win over the Excel Panthers.
The Tigers of Brewton used a 9-0 run in the first quarter to break a 4-4 tie and take a 13-4 lead with 1:23 left in the first quarter. T.R. Miller would go on to lead 15-7 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Tigers outscored Excel 9-6 to take a 24-13 lead at the half.
Excel would start the third quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 24-19. T.R. Miller would respond with their own 6-0 run to end the quarter with a 30-19 lead.
In the fourth, T.R. Miller would continue their run and increase it to 8-0 as they outscored Excel 16-14 in the fourth to win by 13 points.
T.R. Miller had eight scorers in the game with Kori Jackson leading the way with 12 points and Darrion Salter adding nine.
Mark Bryant added seven points and Marc Edge, Antonio Payne, Anthony Herbert and Devonte Jones all having four points each.
Jaquan Dewberry added two points in the win for the Tigers.
T.R. Miller shot 7-for-17 from the free throw line in the win while Excel was 9-for-19.
T.R. Miller boys and girls coach Ron Jackson said both of his teams played good defense Monday night.
“If we play good defense, we can score,” Jackson said. “We are inconsistent right now with our defense but we are still winning. If we continue to play good defense, we can do something. Hopefully we can get better on offense. We are still young right now relating to the game.”
