As construction continues on the new Brewton Middle School, a new construction project is getting under way at T.R. Miller High School.

Brewton City Schools Superintendent Lynn Smith said preliminary work has begun on a new practice field as well as improvements to the football stadium.

Construction equipment has begun moving some of the dirt at the practice field site, where a new track will also encircle the field.

The old concession stand at Brewton Municipal Stadium is being torn down to make way for a new concession stand, and new restrooms are also part of the project.

The new practice field and track, located next to the stadium, are being paid for by a $1 million anonymous donation to the school as well as money left over from a bond issue to pay for the new middle school.

The board was able to increase its budget for the track and practice field — now a $2 million project — because the middle school construction will cost less than board members originally thought it might.

The track surface at the new field will be similar to those used at the University of Alabama and Auburn University.

Construction on the middle school is on target, Smith said, with the opening set for fall.

School officials hope to be able to get into the new school this summer to begin setting up classrooms.

Brewton Middle School Principal Doug Prater said all of the walls and roofs are up and tile is beginning to be laid.

“They’re making progress every day,” he said. “It’s going to be great.”
