Jefferson Davis Community College volleyball and softball coach Misti Nims signed 14 players for her 2011-2012 seasons Monday afternoon.
Nims signed seven softball players and eight volleyball with one player signing in both sports. Of the 14, 12 are from Alabama and two from Florida. Two of the signees are from Flomaton High School.
Signing with the Lady Warhawks for softball was: Elissa Kelley (Hoover High), Carley Parker (Rehobeth High), Jennifer Fisher (Daphne High), Paige Odom (Baker High), Kayla Watson (Pelham High), Kristen Evans (West Blocton High), and Jaime Sanders (Mary G Montgomery).
Signing for volleyball was: Sanders, Hanna Anderson (Mary G Montgomery), Tori Bracewell (Straughn High), Sarah Steele (Flomaton High), Tara Gafford (Flomaton High), Nyia Underwood (Pine Forest High, FL), Kiki Youngblood (Foley High), and Shelby Weidenhamer (Navarre High, FL).
Nims said there is a lot of talent between the both teams and she is really excited and thinks all will continue to help the JDCC programs improve.
“We are very excited about the 2011 class,” Nims said. “Overall great talent from some very successful high schools. As far as volleyball this will be the tallest class that I have recruited since starting at JDCC in 2001. We are highlighted by 6-3 Youngblood, 6-1 Gafford and all-star player Underwood at 5-9. Along with Steele, Sanders, Weidenhamer, Bracewell, and Anderson, we may have a true freshman class starting at all positions.”
Nims said softball is even more exciting with recruits from former state champions and runner up high schools.
“(We are) highlighted by catcher Carley Parker and Paige Odom along with pitcher Elissa Kelley and Jaime Sanders,” Nims said. “We also have Jennifer Fisher an outstanding first base player and natural ability at shortstop from Kristen Evens. Kayla Watson has many great characteristics and should be our starting second baseman next year. We still have spots to fill but have secured some voids for the 2011 class. I hope to have one more signing date later this term to finalize the last few spots for both sports.”
