The Washington County High School Lady Bulldogs found themselves barking up the wrong tree Thursday night in Brewton in the class 3A area 1 tournament semifinals against the Lady Tigers of T.R. Miller.
T.R. Miller improved to 19-5 overall as they dominated WCHS 44-8 to advance to the finals of the tournament Saturday against Clarke County in Brewton at 3 p.m.
Clarke County defeated Bayside Academy 39-27 in the other game Thursday.
“We did an excellent job of blocking out tonight,” T.R. Miller Lady Tiger head coach Ron Jackson said. “That is something that we have spent a lot of time working on. Courtney Jones scored a little bit on the inside for us tonight and that was good to get that out of her because we need her scoring around the basket in some big games. She had a big game tonight and looked confident down on the inside. That is always good. We shot the ball well tonight on the outside. It is always good to win and get a big lead early and get some younger players in the game and play a little bit and score a few points. So tonight was a good thing.”
The Lady Tigers dominated the game from start to finish Thursday holding the Lady Bulldogs to single digits in total scoring.
The Lady Tigers started the game on an 11-0 run to lead with 4:09 left in the first quarter.
Washington County got their first and only points of the first quarter at the 3:43 mark to end the run for the Lady Tigers. The two points for Washington County would be their lone points of the whole first half as T.R. Miller ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to lead 21-2 after one quarter of play.
The Lady Tigers would increase their run to 24-0 as they held Washington County scoreless in the second quarter and outscore them 14-0 to take a 35-2 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, T.R. Miller increased their run to 26-0 to take a 37-2 lead with 6:00 left in the quarter.
Washington County ended the run with a three-pointer with 2:23 left to play to cut the lead to 37-5.
Washington County would score five points in the quarter while T.R. Miller had seven as the Lady Tigers increased their lead to 35 points after three quarters, 42-7.
In the fourth quarter, T.R. Miller outscored Washington County 2-1 to get the win by 36 points.
T.R. Miller was 1-for-7 from the free throw line in the win while Washington County was 1-for-2 from the line.
The Lady Tigers had eight scorers in the game with Jones leading with 11 points and Sha Kiser having 10. Leah Brundidge added seven points and Adrian Gibbs had six. Brittany Rush had four and Taylor Guthrie, Emonea Curry and Shakira Nicholson all had two points.
With the win Thursday, T.R. Miller will now advance to the sub-region round of the playoffs.
If the Lady Tigers defeat Clarke County Saturday they will get the loser of the area 4 championship game between Trinity and Montgomery Academy. With a loss Saturday, T.R. Miller will travel to the winner of that same game.
