The T.R. Miller varsity Tiger basketball team saw their season end in the semifinals of the area tournament Friday in Daphne as they lost to Bayside Academy 56-41.
With the loss, the Tigers ended the season with a 6-16 record.
T.R. Miller led Bayside Academy 10-6 after the first quarter but saw their lead vanish in the second quarter as the Admirals outscored T.R. Miller 18-13 in the quarter to lead 24-23 at the half.
In the third quarter, Bayside Academy held a 19-12 scoring advantage to increase their lead by seven points to take a 43-35 lead heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, Bayside Academy ended the game on a 13-6 run to win by 15 points.
Darrion Salter led the Tigers with 18 points and Marc Edge had 11.
Mark Bryant chipped in four points and Kameron Winn, Jaquan Dewberry, Antonio Payne, and Caleb Hubbard all having two points each.
“I think the boys went out and played Friday night a great game,” T.R. Miller Tiger head coach Ron Jackson said. “We were in the game at halftime as we trailed by one. We led most of the second quarter but towards the end, we got a little faint and that allowed them to get their lead. They are a disciplined team and we needed to foul them and they are a good free throw shooting team. It was really closer than the final score. They shot a lot of free throws at the end to put the game away.”
The season for the Tigers showed six wins this season after a winless 2009-2010. In the 2008-2009 season, the Tigers won five games.
“At the beginning of the season, we were playing like freshman,” Jackson said. “One of the things that I noticed was we had game playing inexperience. We lacked basic knowledge of the game and other things like that. But towards the end of the year, I would say we got a year under our belt. We had the opportunity to win against Bayside Academy but we are not at that point yet of knowing what to do and when to do it. That hurt us, but another year or two we will win 15 games. Hopefully next year we will win 15 games. It will take some work over the summer though.”
