Red Cross helping storm victims

Local officials were on the scene quickly to aid in cleanup from Friday night’s storms.
Sandy Zuiderhoek, director of the East Escambia Chapter of the Red Cross, said that in the Brewton area there were four houses destroyed, three major, two minor and one affected home.
Christ Smith, disaster and safety officer with Red Cross, said he had been to the area passing out clean-up kits and tarps and making sure there was food and clothing help.
“Everyone had somewhere to go,” Smith said. “We didn’t have to put them up in a motel, but some of them need a little help with food and clothing.”
Zuiderhoek also said the Red Cross would appreciate any help they can get to help these people. “This event has been assigned a National American Red Cross Disaster Relief Operation number and will be nationally accounted and funded,” Zuiderhoek said. “We still need to raise as much money as possible to help cover the cost of the operation.”
Funds can be accepted at P.O. Box 252, Brewton, Ala. 36427, or those interested can text 90999 and $10 will be added to their next phone bill.
