Where to donate locally

Several area groups are seeking donations for tornado victims in north and central Alabama.
Among them:
• Brewton Public Library is sponsoring a relief drive for northern Alabama. The library is collecting these items: cases of bottled water (there is a desperate need), cases of Gatorade, bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, Band-Aids and First Aid kits. The library is partnering with FedEx ground in Evergreen to take part in the relief drive.
• There is a drop box at the Brewton Area YMCA. Some items to consider bringing: Non-perishable food items, canned foods, power bars, sports drinks; paper products- toilet paper, paper towels; hygeine products-shampoo, soap, toothpaste/brushes; sanitary supplies; cleaning products; baby care items-diapers, wipes, formula; batteries/flashlights.
• Donations for tornado victims in Tuscaloosa are being accepted at the Flomaton Fire Department. Items requested are water, crackers, Gatorade, cookies, wipes, batteries, battery powered items and non-perishable food items. Items can be dropped off at the firehouse on U.S. 31 South Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Trucks with supplies will leave Flomaton at noon Saturday.
• St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Brewton will be a staging area for these supplies: bottled water, paper products, diapers, sanitary supplies, wipes, and foil-wrapped energy bars.
• Red Cross is taking monetary donations for its disaster fund. You can mail checks to the Red Cross at P.O. Box 252, Brewton, Ala. 36427 or text “Red Cross” to 90999 and a $10 donation will be applied to your phone bill.
• First United Methodist Church will take up a collection at Sunday services, but donations can also be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief with checks designated for “Storms 2011, UMCOR” at any United Methodist Church or may be mailed to: UMCOR, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087
