Blueberry Classic boasts full house

For the 31st year, teams of women golfers took to the course at the Brewton County Club to carry on the tradition of the Blueberry Classic golf tournament.
Organizers registered 96 women who paired up to go through the course Wednesday as part of the event.
Mary Shirley, one of the organizers and the mistress of ceremonies for the event, said the field of players isn’t anything unusual for the event.
“We can only take 96 players,” Shirley said. “We always have a waiting list. This event has gotten to be popular and has grown just by word of mouth.”
Shirley said players from as far away as Metaire, La., participated in the 2011 Blueberry Classic tournament.
“We have a lot of ladies who come to the tournament year after year,” Shirley said. “We get players from Mobile, Crestview and Niceville, Fla. Some of these players come to play with our golfers in this tournament because we go play in their tournaments. It’s a great group of women and we have a lot of fun.”
Following the close of the tournament, players were given goodie bags filled with everything blueberry, Shirley said.
“We always give blueberries to our players,” Shirley said. “This year we included a mug made by Jim Gay and so many others included items for our door prize give aways.”
