A fire destroyed the library at Pollard-McCall Junior High School Wednesday morning.

Randall Little, assistant superintendent for Escambia County Schools, said the loss of the facility was a tragedy.
“We suffered a flesh wound today,” Little said. “It could have been much worse.”
William Shell, who is working with the summer program underway at the school, said no students or staff were in the library when the fire was discovered.
“We usually meet in the library every morning,” Shell said. “I had my group in the gym when we heard the alarm. When we realized where the fire was, all of the students were taken to the front of the campus. I’m glad nobody was in the library. Everyone was safe.”
Firefighters from McCall Volunteer Fire Department, Brewton Fire Department and Flomaton Fire Department responded to the call. Members of the Escambia County Sheriffs Department also responded to the scene. Several volunteers could be seen helping firemen stretch hoses and work to extinguish the flames.
Hugh White, principal at the school, was also on the scene while the blaze was being battled. No information on the cause of the fire was immediately available. An investigation into the cause of the blaze is expected.
