The 12-under girls Cal Ripken All-Stars pulled off a unique feat on Sunday — the first state title for youth softball in Brewton.
Coach Will Ruzic said the victory shows how far the program has come in a short time.
“This has been a great opportunity for the girls and an incredible fun time for them,” Ruzic said. “This is only the second year that we have had organized softball for girls this age.”
Ruzic credited the success of the T.R. Miller High School softball team with inspiring the younger players.
“We have a high school team that is an outstanding role model for the younger girls,” he said.
The 10-under All-Stars will now head to Tennessee for the Cal Ripken World Series next month.
“To be able to win the 10 and under Babe Ruth Softball Championship for these 11 girls is something very special,” Ruzic said. “They went to Andalusia and won in four straight games and that is something they can be very proud of. I know that I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
