An Alabama State Department of Corrections inmate is back behind bars after less than 48 hours on the run.

William P. Riley surrendered to Homewood Police in central Alabama just before 11 p.m. Tuesday night according to Brian Corbett, information officer for the Alabama Department of Corrections.

“The subjected tried to elude police in a vehicle pursuit but went down a dead end street,” Corbett said. “He then bailed on foot for a short distance before falling into a creek bed.”

Corbett said canine units were dispatched to the area to aid in the search but never made contact with the suspect.

Riley was not armed at the time of his surrender to police, Corbett said.

A second suspect, Roosevelt Humphrey, was taken into custody along with Riley, Corbett said.

“Humphrey served time in the Alabama Department of Corrections for burglary and theft of property,” Corbett said. “His sentence ended in 2003.”

Both men were being held at Homewood Police Department. Additional charges are pending against Riley including escape and receiving stolen property.
