Teams fall at World Series in Andalusia

After waiting weeks to play in their first 2011 Cal Ripken 12U World Series games Thursday in Andalusia, both the Brewton and East Brewton teams were greeted with tough losses to teams from New Jersey and California.
East Brewton lost to Hazlet of New Jersey 17-1 while Brewton was greeted in the tournament with a 14-0 loss to California’s Lodi.
In another late night game Thursday, Florida’s Oviedo 6-0 defeated Massachusetts’s Halifax team.
Brewton and East Brewton were set to be back in action Friday at 8:30 a.m. against Hazlet and Oviedo respectively.
In Friday morning’s games, East Brewton lost to Oviedo 10-0 while Brewton lost to Hazlet while Brewton lost to Hazlet 15-0. Both teams failed to get a hit.
Both teams will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. Friday night with Brewton playing Halifax and East Brewton playing California.
Saturday, at 10:30 a.m., Brewton and East Brewton will play each other followed by games at 7:30 p.m. against Oviedo of Florida and Halifax.
Individual stats from Thursday’s games were not known.
California 14, Brewton 0
With Lodi leading 4-0 after two innings of play, the all stars from California added six in the third inning and four in the fourth to defeat Brewton 14-0.
Lodi had eight hits in the win and no errors while Brewton was held to one lone hit and made four errors.
Bethany McDonald had the lone hit for Brewton and Taylor Austin pitched in the loss.
Lodi scored three runs in the first inning and one in the fourth before scoring six in the third and four in the fourth.
New Jersey 17, East Brewton 1
The South Alabama champions allowed 15 runs in the first inning while being held to one run in the top of the fourth as they lost by 16 runs, 17-1.
After scoring 15 in the first, Hazlet added two in the second inning to take a 17-0 lead after two innings of play.
East Brewton’s lone run came in the top of the fourth inning when Kelsi Chandler scored on a New Jersey error.
New Jersey pounded out 16 hits in the win while holding East Brewton to no hits while both teams committed one error each.
Florida 6, Massachusetts 0
In other action, Oviedo shutout Halifax 6-0 to pick up a win in their first game of the tournament.
After both teams failed to score after two innings of play, Florida scored one run in the bottom of the third inning and added five in the bottom of the fourth to help aid in the 6-0 win.
Florida had six hits and two errors in the win while Halifax had one hit and no errors.
