Two preseason leaders will shoot to work their way back through the pack if they hope to regain their spot atop their respective classes in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s high school football poll.
Both Class 2A favorite Leroy and Class 1A leader Sweet Water were replaced in the first regular season poll released today by Elba and Linden, respectively, in the vote of ASWA member sports writers.
Neither the Bears or Bulldogs fell far; Leroy dropped to No. 2 after a loss to Class 3A No. 5 Washington County, 14-7, was coupled with a 20-14 win by Elba over Opp. Linden flopped spots with Sweet Water as 1-2 in Class 1A by virtue of a 52-0 win over Class 5A Central-Tuscaloosa and the Bulldogs 28-7 loss to Class 4A No. 1 Thomasville.
The Tigers stayed on top this week’s Class 4A poll, joining the four other No. 1’s in keeping their perch – Class 6A Daphne, Class 5A Briarwood Christian, Class 3A Leeds and Monroe Academy in the AISA. Leeds and Thomasville were unanimous choices for the second-straight poll.
In games among ranked teams: Class 6A No. 2 Hoover is at No. 3 Spain Park as the Jaguars seek their first win ever over the Bucs in the 10th meeting between the two schools. Also, Class 6A No. 5 Davidson hosts Class 5A No. 4 Vigor, Class 3A No. 7 Bayside Academy is at No. 6 T.R. Miller, Class 1A No. 2 Sweet Water hosts Class 3A No. 8 Gordo, AISA No. 1 Monroe Academy at No. 6 Patrician, and No. 8 Glenwood is at No. 9 Lowndes Academy.
