Lightning may be responsible for fires

A storm that swept through the Brewton area today may have brought conditions that may have been responsible for two fires Wednesday afternoon.
Brewton Fire Department personnel were dispatched to 812 Douglas Avenue just after 1 p.m. Wednesday. When firefighters arrived on the scene smoke could be seen coming from a shed on the property at the residence.
Fire and police personnel remained on the scene to ensure the safety of those traveling along Douglas Avenue until the fire was extinguished and firefighters left the scene. Traffic along a portion of Douglas Avenue was rerouted while firefighters worked the scene.
The flames were extinguished with no injuries reported in the fighting of the fire.
A second fire call was answered by Brewton Fire Department personnel on Sowell Road near Woodmere Drive. Witness on the scne at the Sowell Road fire said initial findings indicate the fire was caused by a lightning strike.
No injuries of homeowners or firefighters was reported in either incident Wednesday afternoon.
