This November, the Yancey Jernigan Foundation will have its inaugural Veteran’s Day 5K race and 1-mile fun run.
The race will be held Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 a.m. at the Brewton Area YMCA.
“Exercise is the No. 2 way to help prevent cancer,” Yancey Jernigan Foundation founder and widow of the late Yancey Jernigan Emmie Jernigan said. “The No. 1 thing is to stop smoking. We would like to encourage everyone to attend, even walkers. You do not have to finish first in order to be accomplished. We would like a huge turnout.”
Yancey Jernigan lost his battle with cancer in July.
The course will be in and around the neighborhoods close to the YMCA and will be a marked flat course.
A fee of $20 will be administered on or before Nov. 5 and will increase to $25 from Nov. 6-12.
Late registration and packet pick-up on the day of the 5K will begin at 7 a.m. Awards will be given to the top male and female overall winner and two make and females in age groups 9-and-under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70-and-up. Also, an award will be give for masters 40-and-up and grandmasters 50-and-up.
