A Brewton man is facing assault charges in connection with a Thursday morning stabbing that left his girlfriend and her unborn child hospitalized.

Derrick Oliver, 22, was charged in an assault that left his victim with seven stab wounds in additional to multiple bruises.

Brewton Police Sgt. Steven Ferguson said officers were summoned to the D.W. McMillan Hospital emergency room just after 5 a.m. Thursday morning to find the victim seriously wounded.

“Officers interviewed the victim and she said her boyfriend had brought her to the hospital only after making her promise not to tell how she got the injuries,” Ferguson said. “The boyfriend was in the lobby at the hospital at the time of the interview.”

Ferguson said he and another investigator with the department also interviewed the victim.

“She told us that her boyfriend had come home intoxicated and the two began to struggle,” Ferguson said. “She said he had taken some of the evidence behind the home and tried to burn it.”

Ferguson said a trip to the home of the couple revealed evidence consistent with the victim’s account of what happened.

“We found blood inside the home,” Ferguson said. “We went behind the home and we were able to save some of the evidence including the knife used in the attack.”

Ferguson said the suspect was transported to the police department for questioning in the case.

“At first he denied any part in causing the victim’s injuries,” Ferguson said. “He did eventually tell us that the two had gotten into a struggle and at some point the knife came out.”

Oliver was charged with first-degree assault in the case and was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where he was booked on the charges against him.

Ferguson said the victim and the unborn child were in stable condition following the attack.
