Habitat build under way

Habitat volunteers were already at work Friday, preparing for the first full day of construction on a home they hope to finish in time for the holidays.
Starting a week and a day later than expected, the East Brewton build by the Habitat organization gets into full swing today as volunteers raise the walls of the home.
Work was delayed by some logistical problems with one of the organization’s suppliers.
“We are going to need all the help we can get with this build,” HFH Executive Director Alecia Glaize said. “We still hope to have the Thompson family in their new home by Christmas.”
Work days are scheduled throughout the coming weeks with concentrated schedules each weekend. Work today will continue through 4 p.m., with work planned from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Glaize said.
Construction will continue on Nov. 19 and 20, with an 8 a.m. start on Saturday and a 1:30 p.m. start on Sunday.
“We will be able to coordinate some work time on weekdays by appointment,” Glaize said. “If there is a group or organization that would like to volunteer some specific time during the week we can certainly arrange to get some work done. We will need to coordinate weekday work times with Habitat building team members so we will need some advance notice if someone wants to work.”
Glaize said volunteers should pre-register to join the building team, but registration may also be done on-site on scheduled workdays.
The building site in East Brewton is at 115 Mayo St. For information or to register as a volunteer, contact the Habitat office at 867-0095 or visit the Habitat Web site at www.escambiahfh.org.
