BYF Mites fall in playoffs

The Brewton Youth Football Mites wrapped up their 2011 season in the first round of the playoffs last week with a 14-0 loss to the Pensacola Tigers.
In a hard-fought defensive game, Pensacola scored first in the first quarter to take an early 6-0 lead before adding a late touchdown in the fourth with the conversion to get the win by 14.
Toby Jenkins led with 12 solo tackles and several assisted sacks and Jae’dyn Crosby, Tavaous Smith, Cody Hall, Devonta Bradley, Da’Marious Luckey and Da’Quan Johnson aided in the defensive effort.
Demonte Jenkins had an interception and a 22-yard run in the third quarter. Braidyn Jackson, Demonte Jenkins, Devonta Bradley and Toby Jenkins had a combined 83 yards rushing.
Overall this season for the Mites, Jenkins led with 716 total rushing yards followed by Bradley’s 430, Jenkins’ 233, Jackson’s 224 and Johnson’s 109.
There were 20 touchdowns scored with seven credited to Bradley. The team had four interceptions with two belonging to Jenkins and Johnson and Bradley having the other two.
Head coach George Watson, a 30-year veteran of Brewton Youth Football, watched from the sideline while the Tigers made statistical history.
“I’m proud of our team and their accomplishments this year,” Watson said. “They have grown in spirit, ability and respect. They have really come together as a team. I always tell them to put God first and everything else will fall into place.”
