WSN girls defeat Excel, boys fall

In their second game of the year and first home game Tuesday against Excel, the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles picked up their first win while the varsity Eagles fell to 0-2.
No information was known from the B-team game.
In the Lady Eagles game, W.S. Neal won 40-19 to improve their record to 1-1 while the varsity Eagles lost 63-48 to fall to 0-2.

WSN Lady Eagles 40, Excel 19
After a tight first half, the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles pulled away from Excel in the second half to get their first win by 21 points, 40-19.
After the first quarter, both teams were tied at 6-6 and the Lady Eagles led by two points, 16-14, at the half following a 10-8 advantage in the second quarter.
In the second half, W.S. Neal outscored Excel 24-5 as they held a 13-4 advantage in the third quarter and an 11-1 advantage in the fourth to get the win.
“Six different girls scored five or more points en route to this victory,” Lady Eagle head coach Kasson Whitten said. “Neal caused 28 Excel turnovers and held them to 1-for-17 from the free throw line.”
The Lady Eagles were led by Glenasia Butler, Tiana Smith, and Jasmine Crook all with eight points.

Excel 53, WSN Eagles 48
Excel’s free throw shooting and W.S. Neal’s turnovers where the key thing in a 53-48 loss for the W.S. Neal Eagles Tuesday at home.
Excel shot 12-for-24 from the line and W.S. Neal made 32 turnovers in the loss as the Panthers earned the win by six.
Excel led 13-5 after the first quarter and 23-19 at the half over the Eagles after W.S. Neal’s 14-10 advantage in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Excel used a 15-9 advantage to increase their lead to 38-28 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, W.S. Neal cut into the lead by four points with a 19-15 advantage but could not get the win as they lost by six.
Josiah Nettles led with 14 points in the loss.
