Three of last season’s boys state champions are ranked No. 1 in this year’s initial Alabama Sports Writers Association high school basketball rankings.
Class 5A Wenonah, Class 2A Tanner and Class 1A Pickens County start the season at the top spot.
Wenonah has breezed through eight of its first nine games, losing only to Tennessee’s Ridgeway in a Memphis tournament.
Tanner returns all five starters from last year’s 27-6 team that beat Barbour County in the 2A finals. Barbour County is ranked No. 2 this week. Because its football team played for a state title last week, Tanner has yet to start its basketball season.
Pickens County is off to a 2-0 start and has two All-State players returning. Pickens County was 30-1 last season.
The other top-ranked teams are Class 6A Bob Jones, Class 5A Wenonah, Class 4A Sumter Central, 3A Clarke County and AISA Lee-Scott. Sumter Central is a first-year school formed by the merger of perennial powers Sumter County and Livingston.
In the girls rankings, only Class 5A Center Point (formerly Erwin) earned the top spot from last year’s champions. Other girls top-ranked teams are Class 6A Hoover, Class 4A Good Hope, Class 3A Clements, Class 2A Barbour County, Class 1A Holy Spirit and AISA Lee-Scott.
